Blackberry Nice Cream (Dairy-Free, High Protein)

Dairy-free, high-protein ice cream free of animal products.

Blackberry Banana Nice Cream Vegan

Did you know you can make your own ice cream with only a couple ingredients, none of which contain dairy? I love the texture and temperature of ice cream but would prefer to skip the animal products. This is precisely why I call it “nice” cream: cruelty-free and full of compassion. It was also quite cheap as I picked these blackberries off the side of the road (I love the bountiful berries come summertime in BC!).

Cow’s milk contains insulin-like growth factor-1 which may increase the risk of breast cancer. It can also spike insulin levels contributing to inflammation and acne, especially in women with PCOS. Plus, studies have shown milk consumption doesn’t actually decrease the risk of osteoporosis and may actually rob our bones of calcium due to its acidity. So give this non-dairy cold dessert (or breakfast) option a try and let me know your thoughts!

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 frozen bananas
  • 10 frozen blackberries (organic)
  • 1 scoop plant-based protein powder (organic, non-GMO)
  • ice to thicken
  • toppings of choice

How to:

  1. Peel and chop bananas the day before (or longer) and freeze in tupperware or plastic bags along with the blackberries.
  2. Remove frozen bananas and blackberries from freezer and blend in food processor with protein powder and ice. You can add liquid if it isn’t blending well but limit liquid for a thick consistency.
  3. Add toppings like fruit or nuts and enjoy before your nice cream melts!

  1. That’s great that you can make some ice-cream that doesn’t contain dairy, since a lot of people are lactose intolerant. It looks delicious!

    1. Wonderful! What is the big city you live in? I live in Vancouver with some good vegan options but, of course, they are pricey! Bananas are pretty cheap, and then if you can find berries on the side of the road you have yourself vegan ice cream! 🙂

      1. I’m in Chicago! The vegan ice cream options exist but they’re few and far between and, as you mention, are pricey! I love going to little produce markets and farmers markets to get some great fresh berries. So clearly I’m going to have to do this.

  2. I’m a PCOS gal too. And, yep, no milk for me. I use unsweetened almond milk when I need to. I love how your blog is designed.

  3. That’s amazing presentation D! Love the description and the photos. Makes me long for Pender already!

    1. Very good point. I use a food processor when I can, and if I must use a blender then I add liquid like almond mylk or water (just enough to get everything moving). I have heard really powerful blenders, like a Vitamix, can do it no problem with no liquid (this is a dream of mine haha).

    1. Thank you! I have heard a lot of people doing the Whole 30. What has your experience been like so far? I just read about it briefly.. seems like this recipe would fit in from my understanding! 🙂

  4. I love that – Nice Cream is a great name! And it sounds delicious, too. I think the vegan in my life (who loves blackberries almost too much) will be all over this recipe. 🙂

  5. Yum! I’ve never made “nice cream” but I like to use frozen blackberries & bananas in my smoothie bowls, and then the texture is very similar. Makes me feel like I’m eating ice cream for breakfast 😉

    1. Hehe, exactly! For me, nice cream and smoothie bowls are the same thing 😛 … thick, creamy frozen fruit that gives the illusion of a delicious frozen treat. Yum is right! 🙂

  6. DEAD. This looks DELICIOUS! I’ve seen Instagram posts about Nice Cream but haven’t found recipe I liked…this looks right! Plus your photos are amazing. I’d give anything for a bowl of this Nice Cream and the view you have! 😛

  7. Wow this looks so delicious! Its hard to believe its so healthy and easy to make too. Sharing on tweeter & pinning. Visiting from Healthy Living Link up. Have a healthy, happy & blessed day! Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe.

  8. This looks delicious! I have tried similar ice creams in the past and they are truly a great treat when you are craving dairy ice cream. I haven’t tried it with pea protein before though and I think I may try your recipe next! 🙂
